The thousand-year-old banyan tree on Son Tra peninsula: A magnificent work of nature

The “thousand-year banyan tree” located on Son Tra peninsula has a unique shape, both majestic and mysterious, becoming a tourist attraction every time they come to Da Nang city.

The thousand-year-old banyan tree is located on the eastern edge of the Son Tra peninsula, belonging to the 63 nature reserve, 2km from Nghe cape, 11km from Linh Ung Pagoda.

The banyan tree was discovered in 1771. Scientists have determined the tree’s lifespan is more than 800 years.

The banyan tree is 22m high, the circumference of the main trunk and the sub-tree cluster is 85m.

The canopy is wide, each branch is arranged in layers, interwoven. In particular, the banyan tree has 26 sub-roots that hang down, clinging to the ground, creating a massive and majestic appearance.

According to the sign “Vietnam Heritage Tree” placed at the foot of the banyan tree, this place was once chosen by the militia and special forces in Quang Nam and Da Nang as a revolutionary base for two resistance wars against foreign invaders. invade.

In June 2014, the banyan tree was recognized as a heritage tree by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment.

Visitors here are reminded not to draw graffiti, chisel and carve on the trunk to protect the heritage, but sometimes there are still some wounds on the tree trunk carved by young people.
