According to AFP news agency, people in the capital Beijing flocked to supermarkets to buy goods on May 12, fearing that the government would order a 3-day blockade as reported on social networks.

The incident immediately caused the authorities to step in and find out that the person who spread the rumor was a 39-year-old woman surnamed Yao.

Beijing police confirmed that they had found the suspect and applied some criminal measures, implying that she may have arrested or put her under house arrest.

In a statement on May 13, the police described the woman’s actions as “serious social disorder” but did not disclose how to handle.

Beijing authorities have reassured that there will be no blockade and asked people not to panic and hoard food.

As expected, Beijing will conduct large-scale COVID-19 testing within 3 days this weekend. Officials have advised people to stay at home and limit movement for these three days.

In addition to the woman surnamed Yao, Beijing police also sought a man surnamed Chen for spreading the news that more than 1,000 F0 were wandering without a mask in Beijing’s Haidian district, according to an announcement on May 13.

While Beijingers worry they may have to go through a hard blockade like Shanghai, the capital’s government China still refrain from such a move.

In addition to the local blockade points, Beijing has closed restaurants, eateries on-site and tourist attractions and asked people to work remotely, limiting non-essential travel.

According to AFP, China’s immigration authorities have also strengthened a policy of “strictly restricting non-essential overseas activities of Chinese citizens”.

However, in a statement on May 13, the Chinese government denied information that banned citizens from going abroad or stopped issuing new passports as Western media claimed.
