4 mass lectures on Science and Technology Day

The event includes 4 public lectures and 1 panel discussion.

The first lecture by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Van Trung – Director of the Institute of Physics, director of the International Center for Physics – presented.

Assoc. Trung showed that the air environment around us including gases and suspended particles such as dust or aerosols has always been a concern of the community, especially in big cities. The assessment of air quality requires making highly accurate measurements of the density and distribution of these air or dust components.

Some modern physical methods are described and analyzed in detail in his lectures, including: spectroscopic methods for in situ measurement or remote sensing of polluting gases such as NOx, Ozone…; Laser scattering method to determine the density and size distribution of dust particles. Thereby, the lecture emphasized the important role of Physics in assessing the quality of the living environment around us and its contributions to the process of sustainable development.

The second lecture by Prof. TSKH. Dinh Nho Hao – Chairman of the Science Council, Institute of Mathematics.

He takes listeners on a tour of the world of inverse math from the time of Plato (4th century BC) when slaves past silhouettes on the walls of caves, conjecture about what happened in the outside world. ; Eratosthenes (3rd century BC) measured the circumference of the earth; from Newton’s discovery of the law of universal gravitation based on Kepler’s three laws of the motion of celestial bodies, to finding minerals, anti-personnel mines, tomography… and even a very trendy issue – Machine Learning (Machine Learning).

Although inverse problems are everywhere, but Professor Hao said that the study of inverse problems is often difficult, due to the high nonlinearity, and especially due to the misalignment – the phenomenon of “one inch wrong, go a mile”.

Professor Hao gave a few simple illustrative examples to show how to overcome these difficulties of the inverse problem.

The third lecture was presented by Assoc.

According to Associate Professor Tran Dinh Phong, finding alternative energy sources to fossil energy plays an important role in achieving the goals of sustainable economic development and environmental protection.

Solar energy is the largest renewable energy source that humans can harness. However, solar energy is unevenly distributed by geographical location, varying by season and by time of day. Therefore, it is necessary to develop technologies that allow efficient conversion of solar energy into other forms of energy, efficient storage in energy-carrying substances/components so that it can be actively allocated and used. use according to need. Hydrogen is one such energy carrier.

Assoc. Phong also discussed some progress of the scientific community in the research and development of photoelectrochemical devices (also known as Artificial Leaves) that allow generating hydrogen from only water and sunlight. He highlighted the technological challenges that need to be addressed in order to realize the competitiveness of hydrogen produced from water with hydrogen currently produced industrially from natural gas.

In addition, the challenge of finding potential technologies for hydrogen storage is also discussed. Assoc.

The fourth lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tri – Chairman of the National Committee of the Program ‘Human and Biosphere’.

GS. Tri lecture on ‘Systematic thinking in the construction and management of UNESCO biosphere zones in Vietnam’. According to Prof. Tri, the purpose of building UNESCO biosphere reserves in the world and as well as in Vietnam is ‘harmony between humans and nature’, namely conservation for development and development for sustainable development. conserve.

In order to successfully accomplish the above goal, Prof. Tri said the principles of ‘respect for differences’ and ‘community participation’ need to be respected and strictly implemented in all fields with the basic science SLIQ (Systems thinking, landscape planning, interdisciplinary coordination, economics of quality).

These principles are practically applied in all 11 biospheres, successes and failures are discussed, evaluation and lessons learned as well as suggestions for the future direction as well as recommendations. like long term. In addition, 15 state-level basic science tasks (Ministry of Science and Technology) that have been implemented in all biosphere zones were also shared by Prof. Tri to draw experience in the context of the topic ‘mechanical science’. version for sustainable development’.

The seminar “Science and Technology for Environmental Protection” with the participation of 5 experts who are theoretical scientists as well as leading experts and managers in the measurement of environmental indicators, materials new, biospheres.

That is GS.TS. Nguyen Dai Hung – President of Vietnam Physics Association, former Director of Institute of Physics; Assoc.Prof.Dr.Sc. Tran Dinh Phong – Co-Dean of the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ngo Duc Thanh – Co-Dean of the Faculty of Space and Applications, Hanoi University of Science and Technology; Dr. Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang – research officer at the University of Southern California, lead author of a Nature Communications paper on carbon cycling in the ocean; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tri – Chairman of the National Committee of the Program ‘Man and the Biosphere’ of UNESCO.

Experts discussed towards the dissemination of knowledge from science to practice in our country about science and technology in environmental protection.
