Durian is in season, good price

Now, durian are in the main season in many provinces and cities such as Can Tho City, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Vinh Long … are purchased by traders at the garden for about 49,000 – 60,000 VND/kg depending on the type.

This is the price that farmers appreciate quite high. The reason is that in recent years, the area planted to durian has decreased sharply due to the effects of drought and salinity in previous years, making the supply not abundant.

In the current context, many fruits affected by export face difficulties. However, with durian products, domestic consumption is always quite good. The selling price at some times has decreased, but the reduction is not much, compared to other fruits.

This is thanks to the local orientation of farmers to keep the area stable, to focus on producing quality durian varieties associated with the needs of the market, which is bringing good economic efficiency.

More than 2,000 hectares of RI6 durian – a famous and delicious specialty grown in Phong Dien district, Can Tho city, is entering the harvest season.

The new point is that this year durian has a high yield and thanks to linked production, the output of farmers is quite stable.

“Last year, the farming industry earned only 1 ton, now it can harvest 1.5 tons. Last year’s selling price was 45,000 – 46,000 VND/kg, this year it’s 49,000 VND,” said Mr. Luong Minh Tan, Tan Thoi commune, Phong Dien. , Can Tho City, shared.

In addition to choosing quality durian varieties, the agricultural industry also guides people here to produce according to GAP. In particular, the locality directly acts as a bridge to find output for gardeners.

“Introducing durian products to the Department of Industry and Trade and connecting supermarkets to buy products for farmers is very stable,” said Nguyen Trung Nghia, Chairman of Phong Dien District People’s Committee, Can Tho City.

Developing eco-tourism sites associated with durian orchards or putting specialties here on trading floors… is the way this locality is actively doing to increase promotion, diversify consumption channels, and contribute to ensuring ensure prices, output and help this agricultural product reach further.

Strengthening of deep processing for export

An important problem for the fruit industry today is that the loss rate during harvesting, transportation, storage and post-harvest is still quite large. In order to find stable output and improve export competitiveness, our country’s fruit and vegetable factories have been intensifying deep processing, gradually reducing the proportion of fresh export goods.

The dragon fruits here, instead of being sold fresh with uncertain prices and output, are now deeply processed by businesses into convenient products to compete for export. As a result, this factory can consume more than 2,500 tons of fruit and vegetable products every month.

Thanks to deep processing, the factory’s products soon conquered difficult markets such as the US, Japan, Europe… In the past 4 months, although the market had many fluctuations, the export value of the unit still remained. surpassed the $8 million mark, up 15% over the same period in 2021, actively contributing to the overall growth of the industry.

The characteristics of our country’s fruit and vegetable industry are seasonal production, harvest at the same time, large output, if sold fresh, it will be very risky. Deep processing is a sustainable way to help factories actively produce, promote product consumption for farmers, further improve competitiveness and value of Vietnamese agricultural products.

It can be seen that, along with deep processing, the organization of good links from the production area to the processing plant has helped farmers stabilize output and is a model of sustainable development.

However, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in order to invite businesses to invest in processing plants in raw material areas, they must consider the plan of spreading the crop evenly all year round. Secondly, the quality of input materials must be stable, ensuring the credibility of purchasing throughout the year. All must be standard, from cooperatives, raw material areas, support policies, local companions.

In particular, the second quarter is the time when many kinds of fruits are harvested. The output in the southern provinces alone is nearly 1.5 million tons, about 137,000 tons higher than in the first quarter. While consumption is facing many difficulties because China continues to maintain the Zero COVID-19 policy, causing congestion at border gates, processing is considered a fundamental solution.
