G7 foreign ministers meeting to discuss food and energy security

The summit of top diplomats of the Group of leading industrialized countries (G7) took place on May 12 in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Kuleba and his Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu were guests at the conference.

Ukraine is currently one of the most important grain suppliers worldwide. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in 2021, Ukraine will remain the third largest barley exporter and the fifth largest wheat exporter in the world.

At this conference, the participants will also discuss Europe’s energy security in the context of gas supply from Russia recently cut. The G7 will also discuss sanctions against Russia and arms supplies to Ukraine.

According to Foreign Minister Baerbock, the G7 wants to ensure that Ukraine, despite the continuing conflict, continues to be an important exporter of the world’s food. The German diplomat emphasized that the G7 will discuss how to “break” the blockade on grain exports in Ukraine so that the country can continue to export to the world. This is because if wheat were transported by land instead of by sea, only a small amount could be shipped overseas.

Regarding the proposal of Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba for Germany to provide fighter jets to help the country defend, Foreign Minister Baerbock expressed his reservations about Kiev’s proposal, and reiterated his consistent stance. The German government on the establishment of a no-fly zone in Ukraine.
