An GiangHundreds of tons of fish raised in rafts in Vinh Nguon ward, Chau Doc city, died in mass, farmers sold out, the authorities said it could be due to polluted water.
Nguyen Thi Phuong’s four rafts of catfish and halibut have abnormal expressions and have died in series since yesterday. At first, the fish was lethargic, did not swim, raised its belly and died. When discovered, the raft owner separated the damaged fish to another raft, but the fish continued to die.
According to Ms. Phuong, these fish were raised for 9 months, estimated at 60 tons, with an investment cost of more than one billion dong. Dead fish are rescued by people around, priced at 10,000-30,000 VND per kg, while the market price is 50,000-60,000 VND.
“Three days ago, I found the water to be turbid, less flowing than usual, but until now I can’t determine why the fish died in such a mass,” Phuong said.
Nearby, three fish rafts of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa also died in the amount of about 12 tons. The number of red-tailed molluscs and halibut reached a weight of 1.5-2 kg, and when they were about to be sold, they died in mass, with a loss of billions of dong. The owner of the raft used all available tools to marinate the ice, but the amount of dead fish was too large and had to be sold at a cheap price.
Besides Ms. Phuong and Ms. Hoa, there are currently about 30 fish-raising households on the affected section of Hau River. The number of dead fish as of the afternoon of May 14 is more than 120 tons. Some raft owners rushed to move the raft to another place hoping to save the remaining fish.
Ms. Vo Thi Phuong Thao, Chairman of Vinh Nguon Ward People’s Committee, said that this area has about 140 fish farming rafts. Currently 20 rafts have been moved to another location. Today, the number of dead fish has decreased, the government has come to visit, seek support, and at the same time mobilize people to collect and avoid polluting dead fish.
Vice Chairman of Chau Doc City People’s Committee Tran Quoc Tuan said that the cause of death of fish could be due to polluted water environment, heavy rain caused great pressure. The fan raised the water to create oxygen but could not keep up.
In the immediate future, the People’s Committee of the ward and Chau Doc city will estimate the damage and help people consume the dead fish. When concluding the cause, the government takes supportive measures.
