Little-known relationship between COVID-19 and mysterious acute hepatitis in children

Not yet shocked by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are faced with acute hepatitis that is attacking children globally. In less than 2 months, this terrible disease has recorded 348 infections and claimed the lives of 11 children. WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said the above figures may just be the tip of the iceberg compared to the actual numbers.

Faced with the risk of an outbreak of a pandemic, scientists around the world began to study the causes of the disease. However, after a lot of controversies and hypotheses, the cause of acute hepatitis in children is still a mystery that needs more time to be answered.

At first, hepatitis viruses were the top suspects. However, the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) and WHO both announced that they did not find hepatitis A, B, C, D, E viruses in any of the patient samples. At the same time, the research results also make the link between COVID-19 and this mysterious disease hotly debated.

WHO warns COVID-19 may be the cause of disease

There are two most popular theories about whether COVID-19 is related to the cause of acute hepatitis in children. The first is that this disease is caused by a new variant of SARS-CoV-2. The second is that the COVID-19 vaccine is a major cause or impact on the onset of acute hepatitis in children.

Expert Philippa Easterbrook of the WHO Global Hepatitis Program has also taken an official stance on this issue. She said that while Adenovirus is suspected to be the leading cause of illness, a link to COVID-19 cannot be ruled out. The WHO also gave considerable consideration to the role of COVID-19 as a co-infection or pre-existing disease.

Specifically, tests have confirmed about 70% of cases have been positive for Adenovirus. However, up to 18% of patients were positive for COVID-19. In particular, there are many cases of concurrent infection with both types when hospitalized.

As for the suspicion that hepatitis is caused by the COVID-19 vaccine, many scientists disagree. Philippa Easterbrook said: “We have sent survey questionnaires to countries with cases to find out, for example, a certain food link. And importantly, there is no evidence of a link with the COVID-19 vaccine, as most children with hepatitis are young (under 5 years old) and have not received the COVID-19 vaccine.“.

He is currently leading a comprehensive series of research into the genetics of young children with diseases, immune responses and viruses, as well as further epidemiological research.

The UK Health Security Agency said it had not identified any risk factors related to movement, diet, chemical exposure or other risk factors that could explain it. for this outbreak. Therefore, it is expected that next week’s studies will focus on learning about COVID-19 exposures and infections in cases.
