Expert Philippa Easterbrook of the WHO Global Hepatitis Program has also taken an official stance on this issue. She said that while Adenovirus is suspected to be the leading cause of illness, a link to COVID-19 cannot be ruled out. The WHO also gave considerable consideration to the role of COVID-19 as a co-infection or pre-existing disease.
Specifically, tests have confirmed about 70% of cases have been positive for Adenovirus. However, up to 18% of patients were positive for COVID-19. In particular, there are many cases of concurrent infection with both types when hospitalized.

Philippa Easterbrook said: “We have sent survey questionnaires to countries with cases to find out, for example, a certain food link. And importantly, there is no evidence of a link with the COVID-19 vaccine, as most children with hepatitis are young (under 5 years old) and have not received the COVID-19 vaccine.“.
