Modern cars are increasingly ‘green’

Electric cars are considered “green” cars, but they will be “greener” if the headlight socket is made of coffee bean pods instead of plastic or metal.

Electric and hybrid vehicles are being named every day as the elite representatives of “green” cars, which use environmentally friendly energy. The pressure to protect the environment against climate change has led governments to place higher and higher technical barriers. The concept of green cars is no longer simply about the type of energy, but also about the materials and the process of creating them.

Green car – the new race in modern times

In April 2021, Volvo made a video to find the answer to the question of what is the “top” safety test, both in terms of detail and practical application. Bringing a new car into a head-on or side-impact crash, having it jump into the air and land are some of Volvo’s most elaborate tests?

No. Because this company is even more willing to play when Raise a car to a height of 30 m and drop it. But that is not the answer to the question “which safety test is the best”?

Just as the safety test scenes were taking place, in the distance the iceberg poured into the sea. That is the answer. Protecting the environment is the safest thing when developing cars. If the Arctic ice sheets continue to melt or the green forests gradually disappear, no car safety technology can save people from the power of mother nature.

That is why Volvo or many other car manufacturers such as Ford, Nissan, Mercedes, Honda, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen… are shifting to producing pure electric or hybrid vehicles depending on the market, using low-emission energy and materials. environment-friendly to limit global warming. All create a modern race, where the strength of producing cars with internal combustion engines of traditional names fiercely competes with juniors but with rapid growth such as Tesla, BYD. , Nio…

Even in Vietnam, although the charging station infrastructure and people’s shopping habits have not created a big enough catalyst, the signs for the position of clean energy vehicles are increasingly clear. And the companies also have their own plans, whether it is mild hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure electric.

The first is a mild hybrid vehicle, using an electric motor in combination with the engine to increase traction and assist in operation to help save fuel. Luxury car brands such as Mercedes, Volvo, and Audi make first use of products sold in Vietnam.

In October 2020, Volvo made a surprise when it launched the XC90 Recharge, the first plug-in hybrid mid-size SUV in Vietnam. Then, the XC60 Recharge was also introduced. This is the only company in Vietnam that provides mild hybrid and petrol-electric hybrid engines on all product lines.

But Volvo is “not alone” in the green car segment when Porsche at the end of 2020 open sale of pure electric Taycan for Vietnamese guests. Most recently, Mercedes also entered the war with EQS electric vehicle distribution plan in Vietnam from October 2022.

In the popular car segment, VinFast announced to stop producing gasoline cars and switch to pure electric vehicle production from 2023. Toyota, the big man with the number one market share in Vietnam, provides the first hybrid (non-rechargeable) cars of the popular car segment with names like Altis, Camry, Corolla Cross hybrid.

In the near future, Nissan Kicks, Honda HR-V hybrid will also be present in Vietnam. Volkswagen also hinted that it plans to sell electric cars and will have products on display at the 2022 Vietnam auto show.

Green and greener

The race of the world’s automakers towards a zero-emission future is not quite as quiet as the motor of electric cars. More and more resources and cash flow are invested in researching “green” technology in cars. As competition becomes more intense, more and more new “green” standards are set.

“The definition of the premium car is changing,” says Rüdiger Recknagel, environmental manager for the Audi brand. New York Times. “Premium cars now have to be cars that use the best materials, with the least impact on the environment.”

BMW says that recycled materials make up 29% of the components of a luxury car. With the Mission: Zero program, Audi wants to reduce carbon emissions per vehicle by 30% by 2025 compared to 2015. Its system-wide carbon neutrality goal by 2050 is not only the automaker itself but also includes supply partners, manufacturing, logistics and merchandising activities.

Polestar, Volvo’s sub-brand for luxury electric vehicles, uses a material called WeaveTech to replace leather. This is a material derived from PVC. The Swedish automaker also wants the interior of the car in the coming years to be made from recycled PET bottles.

In the popular car segment, at the end of 2020, Ford launched a headlight cavity made from coffee bean shells, the unused shell of roasted coffee beans and purchased from fast food brand McDonald’s. The American company aims to use orange peels and potato skins discharged by this brand to make plastic accessories more resilient.

Efforts towards environmentally friendly materials are also included in the plans of the giant General Motors (GM). The company aims to use PET bottles, which can be made into fabrics, including carpets, for use in cars. GM turns recycled PET plastic into wheel rims, and uses other recycled plastics to make license plates and radio stands.

Green cars are no longer a concept that only encapsulates engines using clean energy, but also a production process, and the materials used must also be environmentally friendly. The car is inherently green, but it will be greener when, in addition to electricity, provides power for the motor to rotate the wheels, interior materials such as seats, dashboard … are not covered with patches of animal skin, plastic or metal. precious type.

The human world has come a long way from walking foot across hundreds of kilometers to trade, to horse-drawn carriages, the first bicycles with wooden wheels, to cars, airplanes or spaceships. As the problem of climate change becomes more serious, people are returning to the most original things like walking and cycling. For cars alone, they are still in the shape of a 4-wheel vehicle, but the seat covers instead of real leather are synthetic fibers from plants, no longer the noise of the internal combustion engine and no CO2 comes out of the exhaust.
