More specifically about depression, which is the most common type of introverted psychosis. 20% of the global population has experienced depression before entering adulthood, 5% of which develop severe depression into chronic. Depression also impairs the learning and social functions of adolescents, and stimulates risky behaviors such as smoking, racing, using drugs, etc.

Signs of depression in teenagers

Dr. Thu Hien shared that until now, parents rarely pay attention to the “mental” health of their children, even this is a discriminatory word. But mental health is the twin brother of physical health, so everyone needs to understand the importance of this issue.

The signs of depression are divided into 4 main types of symptoms: Emotions, Body, Behavior, and Thoughts. If a child has at least 4 signs in 1 of the 4 above expressions, parents need to seek psychologists to receive the most accurate assessment.

Signs of behavioral depression include: eating disorders, difficulty making decisions, decreased communication, sleep disturbances, self-harm, decreased interest, crying for no reason, and wanting to cry. leave school.

Accompanying children to prevent depression

Sharing with the parents of PTLC Olympia School, Dr. Hien recounted a story: “There was a case of depression that I remember very well, when I first met her, she was 16 years old, and came to me for advice. friends. At that time, I said that it is necessary to meet with parents in person because this is a professional rule. But she shared that even though she visited many hospitals, when she got home, her mother always tore up the results and told her to do nothing, just lazy to study. Then recently, the girl texted that she was 18 years old and could pay for psychological treatment courses herself.

This story makes me sad, although there are really many parents who are not good at seeing their children’s problems, but even if their children have called for help but still ignore them, it is extremely sad and worrying.”

To be able to work with their children to prevent depression, parents need to have a proper understanding of mental health, do not be afraid to seek experts about this. Second, it is necessary to create a warm family atmosphere that encourages positive peer relationships. Third, set a good example of behavior for your children and lastly, don’t put too much pressure on them.

Closing the sharing session, Dr. Hien also answered a question that many parents wonder: Should you talk to your child every time the media reports on a suicide?

“If we keep avoiding this issue, it will only lead to extreme thinking. Let’s be more open in this matter, I also have a son about the same age as the recent suicide of a male student at a famous specialized school in Hanoi, and I asked him if he had ever thought like that male student. ?

When your child begins to open up, listen, listen, not just tell. In addition, absolutely do not make judgments and judgments that the behavior is stupid or hurts the family. The speaker is unintentional, the listener is intentional, maybe you are judging your own child.

In the end, suicide is a momentary impulse and it will pass, the most important thing is to help you get through that moment” – Dr. Thu Hien said.
