Jonathan Ive’s super expensive separation design set

Legendary designer Jonathan Ive reveals 12 tools he always carries when he goes out and surprises with their prices.

Jonathan Ive, who led Apple’s design team for 20 years before leaving in 2019, lists the inseparable tools he uses to “mark, measure, and carry around every day”.

These include the $560 Snap-On adjustable torque wrench, $5,645 titanium Linn Ekos SE lever, $530 Hermes tape measure, $3.69 color-coded Wiha hexagon head, eraser Graf Von Faber-Castell platinum-coated for $122, the Mitutoyo protractor for $324, the Starrett 440Z-3RL depth gauge for $355 and the Wempe Navigator II for $1,960. Some of the other tools include a paper folding tool, Montegrappa pens, an antique Visvim pencil case, and a brass-frame magnifying glass from his personal collection.

Many people were surprised with the set of tools, such as a tape measure that costs up to 530 USD (12.3 million VND). “Probably a scale under 500 USD can’t measure accurately,” one person joked on Twitter. “People who buy leather tape measure like Ive measure nothing but the depth of their wallet,” another commented.

However, the majority said that these are items suitable for the position of Jonathan Ive, who was a Vice President and was dubbed Apple’s design legend. He did not describe each item in detail, but said they were not merely tools to do the job.

According to him, every effective tool has a curious beauty hidden in it, and he doesn’t simply spend money to buy something, but also cares and takes care of it.

“There is beauty and joy in machines and tools. They are more than just a means to get things done,” says Jonathan Ive.
