Ukraine launches counter-offensive operation in the east

The Russian military is pouring troops and firepower into the Donbass region, after declaring the conflict to have entered phase 2 from April 19.

However, Ukraine insists it has regained much of the northeast, driving Russian troops out of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Maintaining pressure on Izium and its supply lines would make it difficult for Moscow to encircle Ukrainian forces on the eastern Donbas front.

Speaking about the latest developments in the east, governor Oleh Sinegubov said in a statement posted on social media: “The hottest spot is still the direction of Izium.”

“Our armed forces have turned to counter-attack. The enemy is withdrawing from some battlefields and this is the result of our armed forces,” said Mr. Sinegubov.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces had just hit a series of military positions, including Donbass, killing at least 100 “nationalist elements” of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the situation in Donbass is very difficult.

A group of US Republican senators made a surprise visit to Kiev to discuss increased sanctions against Russia, Zelensky said.

In a statement posted on Instagram, Zelensky said that the visit of the delegation led by Senator Mitch McConnell was “a strong sign of the support of both parties in Congress and the American people for Ukraine”. .

Zelensky “expressed hope that the US Senate will quickly approve an additional aid package worth nearly 40 billion USD for the people of Ukraine”, while the proposal is being considered by the House of Representatives.
