Vietnam won a gold medal in swimming thanks to Schooling breaking the rules

HanoiSingapore and Malaysia both broke the rules and the results were canceled, so the gold medal in the 4x100m swimming content was awarded to Vietnam, on May 14.

The presence of Joseph Schooling made Singapore almost firmly grasp the gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay. But when the fans were about to leave, the electronic board suddenly changed the results. Accordingly, Singapore and Malaysia both canceled the results because of violations. As for Singapore, the reason revealed by the referees was that Schooling made a starting mistake when his teammates hadn’t touched the wall of the tank. Specifically, as detected by the electronic clock, Schooling jumped 0.04 seconds early. The person who discovered Schooling’s error was the Singaporean deputy referee.

Schooling, upon hearing the news, expressed disappointment and quietly left the arena. Before that, Singapore’s legendary fisherman did not hide his joy when he heard that the home team finished first. Schooling’s incident is considered even more surprising because he is a high-class athlete, having set a record at the 2016 Olympics. Moreover, when Schooling started, the Singapore team was leading the rest of the teams.

During many recent SEA Games, relays were seen as exclusive content for Singapore. At the 2019 SEA Games, they won all 6/6 gold medals in the relay events. When the swimming finals on the evening of May 14 ended, the Singapore side still decided to sue the referee team to reclaim the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay gold medal.

This is considered a surprise, when Vietnam won a gold medal for the first time in this content. The silver medal belongs to the Indonesian delegation and the bronze medal belongs to Thailand.

Thus, swimming in Vietnam had a successful competition day. Besides the surprise gold medal in the 4x100m relay, swimmer Pham Thanh Bao also brought home the men’s 100m breaststroke gold medal. He achieved 1 minute 1 second 17, breaking the SEA Games record in this content. Before that, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang brought home a gold medal in the 1500m freestyle, with a time of 15 minutes 0 seconds 75.
