Flexible OLED panels manufactured by LG can combine both folding styles of Samsung Z Fold3 and Huawei Mate X.
At the SID 2022 exhibition, LG said it has successfully researched and manufactured a 360-degree folding screen panel for smartphones. The component displayed by the company has a size of 8.03 inches, which can be folded inward like the Samsung Z Fold3 and folded out like Huawei’s Mate X.
The manufacturer says the product uses UTG ultra-thin glass technology and is coated with anti-fingerprint material to keep its life longer. The resolution reaches 2,480 x 2,220 pixels, a pixel density of 413 ppi, 109.9 % coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 430 nit high brightness. In some cases, the maximum brightness can reach 600 nit in some screen areas.
According to LG, durability tests show that the screen can withstand 200,000 folds in both directions under normal usage conditions.
In addition to the phone panel, LG also introduced another OLED panel that folds horizontally with a large size of 17 inches. The product can only be folded inward and is expected to be used on laptops in the future.
Phone manufacturers are having different ideas for foldable or flexible phones. Samsung, Xiaomi have models with the ability to fold inward while Huawei offers the opposite solution. In addition to the folding Find N model like the Z Fold3, Oppo is also working on rolling screen phones.
