Bottle collectors live on the sidewalks of Saigon

Tran Van Xuyen has lived by picking up bottles near Saigon station for the past 30 years. Many children who got lost at the train station also fell into the same situation as Mr. Xuyen, without anyone or anyone to adopt, just fending for themselves, growing up like plants.

During his clumsy youth years, Xuyen used to smoke pot and then quit, he disciplined himself not to take anything from anyone, living a healthy and kind life. He said, only then can exist in this crowded and cramped sidewalk porch.

The teenager Xuyen was twice sent to the social protection center for literacy and vocational training, but he didn’t suit the environment here, so he applied again. Leaving the center, Xuyen returned to stay near the Saigon station area. He lived a peaceful life, not causing trouble to anyone.

Having lived on a large porch, enough for a place to sleep, blocked by a tricycle, Xuyen has lived for 30 years now. He earns a living by washing bottles, collecting scraps and running from District 1 to District 3, collecting late at night, sleeping on the porch, cooking with a cheap tourist gas stove.

Bathing a day costs 5 thousand, and 20 thousand Xuyen saves money to go to a cafe to ask for a phone charger. He didn’t dare to know anyone, couldn’t count tomorrow because he didn’t have any identification papers. Even applying for a job, renting a house, riding a car or taking a train is unthinkable.

Feeling sorry for the homeless youth wandering for 30 years, a woman living near Saigon station signed up to help him with the program. Like there’s never been a breakupfind the origin.

Going back in time to the lost time, Xuyen has no clear memories. He doesn’t know how old he is, where he comes from, but remembers when he was young, he lived with his stepmother named Nguyen Thi Truc, his father was Tran Van Duyen, and had two younger siblings below.

His father often went to the beach, Xuyen stayed at home with his mother, but because he was so playful, he was often beaten by his mother. Being beaten too much, he ran away from home and got lost on the bus to Ho Chi Minh City. That time he vaguely remembers was 1986 – 1987.

There is no specific clue as to where Xuyen was born and raised. He also did not know whether his hometown was in the North or the Central region, only knew that it was an area with a cold season, when Tet came, there were peach blossoms, banh chung and frozen meat to eat. His house is near 2 rivers and green rocky mountains, his grandmother’s house is right across the river, the family is farming.

The anguish of those who stay

In Tu Lac village, Minh Tan town, Kinh Mon district, Hai Duong, Mr. Tran Van Diep still longs to find his half-brother for many years. Mr. Diep still remembers the last time he saw his brother at noon in the summer of 1989.

“The time he left was around 1989, completely gone. Due to being a neighbor’s farmer and farmer, people cursed and threatened to beat him to death, so he was afraid, climbed over the mountain, left that year, disappeared until that year. now”Mr. Diep said.

And Mr. Tran Van Duyen went to work far away, only to come home to hear that his son had gone missing. He lamented his wife – Mrs. Truc: “I said when I go to work, she stays at home and doesn’t take care of it, take care of it, let it go, but I always go looking for it. She just said one sentence: You gave birth to it, but you can’t teach it, you have to go. Find”.

All those years of losing track of their children is also the same amount of time Mr. Duyen and Mrs. Truc lived in torment. Mrs. Truc takes care of the children with one hand and the house in the other. At that time, the whole family’s economy relied on the profession of making banh cuon.

In the afternoon, her children help Ms. Truc grind flour, at 1-2 a.m. she wakes up the oven, boils water, and bakes cakes until 4-5 a.m., then goes to sell in every corner of the village. “Mother shouldered the family from beginning to end, the whole family relied on her a lot. No matter what brother Xuyen and I am the mother of, I was also beaten by my mother”Diep said.

In 2014, Ms. Truc suddenly passed away due to heart disease before she had time to see her lost step-son again. She still hopes that one day her son will return, and even before he died, she told her two children: “Later on, when Xuyen, your brother returned, you had to relax and return the land for him to live.” Mrs. Truc repeated that advice before closing her eyes and giving up.
