Mining engineer quit his job to go back to his hometown to work as a saw blade

Ha TinhWhen Nguyen Minh Phong quit his state job with a monthly salary of more than 10 million dong and returned to his hometown to work as a saw blade, many people said that he “violated discipline and should be fired”.

Graduated from Faculty of Mining, University of Mining – Geology, in 2007, Mr. Phong, resident of Thanh Binh Thinh commune, Duc Tho district, went to Lao Cai to work for a state-owned company specializing in mining, then moved back to Lao Cai. branch in Quy Hop, Nghe An province, monthly salary more than 10 million dong.

Assigned to hold the position of head of production shift with a good income at that time, but he was not satisfied. Many times when he came home to visit, seeing his father working hard at the mechanical workshop producing saw blades for the carpentry village, he thought “or I will develop the family’s traditional profession and create my own brand”.

Thanh Binh Thinh has the most famous Thai Yen carpentry village in Ha Tinh, producing tables and chairs, cabinets… with beautiful designs, a large domestic market, sometimes even sold abroad. A small mechanical workshop located at the house in Binh Tien A village of Mr. Nguyen Minh Que (66 years old, Phong’s father) often manufactures iron saws and tips for carpentry and sells them to carpentry establishments in the commune. .

Never and did not dare to ask Mr. Que about his monthly income, however, the young engineer realized that this profession “must have potential”. Because if not, how can my father have money to build a new house, cover daily living expenses, and feed the three brothers well enough to go to school?

Thoughts of changing careers are always in Phong’s mind, from the mining site to the meals, or when he is about to fall asleep. Researching online and surveying the market, found that mechanical engineering has potential, not only in craft villages in Can commune but also in many other places. But when it comes to comparison, Phong is very concerned because it is still related to start-up capital.

With agricultural models, the initial investment is not much, he can apply the strategy of taking short and raising long. But with mechanics, the investment in machinery and equipment is much larger.

Lifting up and down for a year, Phong finally decided to “take a risk” at the end of 2015. At this time, he had just married a kindergarten teacher in the commune, intending to return to his hometown to cultivate a small family. push the guy. “My wife said you think carefully, I support it. My parents do not agree, afraid that I am not familiar with manual labor. Many friends are surprised, thinking that such a vision is limited. Many neighbors I talked about it because I violated the discipline, so I was fired, but who would dare to leave the state job and return to the countryside to take such a risk,” Phong said.

In 2016, the mechanical workshop of several tens of square meters in front of the house was divided into two. Mr. Que still does the daily production work as usual, his son is self-sufficient. Previously, the facility was only manual, with two hand-cutting machines, the first 6 months Phong was not suitable, the pace was slow, the income was not equal to the day he worked as a mine engineer.

“I was scolded by my father all the time for not doing what I wanted,” Phong recalls. Sometimes sitting alone, he is very sad but still thinks his plan is right, just has not “found the light”. “Need to have a plan, not to think involuntarily,” Phong recalls his self-assurance when depressed.

The young man then realized that he needed to specialize and upgrade machines. He went to the bank to ask for a loan of nearly VND 500 million for investment, hire more people, buy serrated stamping machines, saw grinders, saw washing machines, automatic welding machines, multi-purpose saw blades and many auxiliary equipment. other…

Thanks to his father’s traditional customers and online attraction, by 2017, Phong’s factory products were sold evenly, giving him a stable income of 20 million dong a month. Phong shared, being trained through university and used to be an engineer helps a lot for the mechanical profession. With good English, with modern machines imported from abroad, he often goes online to learn how to operate and then apply. After the first two years, seeing that Phong was determined, had enough income to take care of his family, Mr. Que was satisfied, and spent many nights awake to teach his children the profession.

In early 2022, the old factory was cramped, labor safety was low, affecting residential areas, Phong decided to rent a new facility in Thai Yen industrial cluster, Thanh Binh Thinh commune to expand its scale. His father also worked with him, his wife quit her job at the kindergarten to help. The workshop is hundreds of square meters, with 10 workers working regularly. The system of machinery and equipment is invested more than one billion dong.

Phong’s mechanical workshop currently produces wood vane saws, agarwood saws, food saws, and sells accessories and components for the carpentry industry. Saws come in various sizes, one meter or more in length. 8 hours a day, processing and manufacturing 200 saws of all kinds. Consumption market in the province is stable with customers in Duc Tho and Huong Khe districts, outside the province there are Nong Son and Tien Phuoc districts (Quang Nam). In addition, there are many other domestic establishments that also ask questions to buy.

“Total monthly revenue is about 150 million dong. Workers receive a salary of 5-8 million dong. Deducting all costs and depreciation of machinery, I make a profit of half a billion dong a year,” Phong said, sharing with the people of the past. The skeptic is now friendly, saying he’s glad he chose the right direction. He and his wife currently have three children (two boys, one girl), good economy, loans have been paid off, have accumulated. He plans to visit more large models in the near future and build a larger workshop than the current one.

Mr. Doan Minh Can, Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Thanh Binh Thinh Commune, assessed Phong as a pioneer who made breakthrough steps. “The potential of the homeland is still very much, the important thing is the ability to take advantage. Phong has learned to rely on the Thai Yen carpentry village brand to bring his mechanical products far, which is a lesson for young people to follow. pursuing the ideal of entrepreneurship”, Mr. Can said.

In December 2021, Phong was awarded the Luong Dinh Cua Award by the Central Youth Union (honoring rural youths who have achieved outstanding achievements in career development and new rural construction). The 35-year-old man smiled and shared his honor, hoping his story will inspire many young people to return to their hometown to start a business. “I think a person is like a car, choosing the right lane to go will bring out all of its functions, the wrong lane will damage,” Phong said.
