More than 20% of reptile species on Earth face extinction
According to the most comprehensive extinction assessment ever conducted of reptiles, up to 21.1% of all reptile species globally are facing extinction. In particular, species living in forests are at much higher risk than species living in dry areas.
Prior to this study, there had been no formal attempt to determine the number of reptile species facing extinction. Using Red Book criteria, the scientists identified 1,829 out of 10,196 reptile species as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered, accounting for 21.1% of the total. known reptile species.
This study was carried out globally for 15 years with the help of 961 researchers, representing 24 countries on 6 continents.
