Singapore detects cases of variant BA.4 and BA.5

Singapore’s Ministry of Health yesterday announced that it had detected 3 cases of infection with the subline of the Omicron variant in the community, including 2 cases of BA.4 variant and 1 case of BA.5 variant.

These cases were detected through PCR testing and confirmed through genome sequencing. All three cases were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization. All three people received a booster shot of the COVID-19 vaccine and self-isolated as soon as they tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The new variants have mutations in the protein that make them more effective in “evading” the immune system and making them more contagious. Therefore, the Ministry of Health recommends that Singaporeans should maintain vigilance and receive booster shots of the vaccine, especially for vulnerable people.
