Salmon is considered Mekong river monster. This one belongs to the family of carp, but the weight is much heavier. Living in the natural environment, coral fish can weigh up to several hundred kilograms. In the past, fishermen on Tien and Hau rivers only needed to catch one fish a year to have money to buy gold.

“A few decades ago, fishermen in the Mekong Delta caught hundreds of kilograms of barramundi, from which they called this fish the Mekong river monster. There is also a legend, when the boat crashed and sank in the river, the fish shouted to save, “team” the boat up. From then on, people called him “he Ho”. There are also people who call it the king’s fish,” said Ly Van Bon, a famous fish farmer in Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tho – said. Mr. Bon is raising about 30 tons of barramundi in cages on the Hau River.

Mr. Bon said, usually “big fish eat small fish”, but especially the species of catfish are vegetarian. They only eat moss. “In 2000, I bought baby catfish weighing about 300 grams from people who unloaded scrubs in the river and put them in cages. After that, I bought more fingerlings at the centers. To date, I have about 30 tons of coral. This is a fish with delicious meat,” Mr. Bon shared.

Mr. Bon said that he had tried to find out about the life span, the largest weight of coral fish, but so far, he still did not know exactly. “The fishermen caught the fish weighing 350kg, 400kg… they found it too big, so they called it the Mekong river monster,” added Mr. Bon.

According to Mr. Bon, the big fish on the Tien and Hau rivers are almost gone; if there are, only in Vam Nao River (An Giang), Bien Ho (Cambodia)…

“Living in the natural environment, the coral fish eat algae, while in the cage, I practice feeding industrial food, so the fish grow faster. When young, the fish only gained about 1kg in weight each year, but as it grew, the fish rapidly increased in weight… The largest fish in my raft weighed about 30kg; the remaining fish are about 15kg, 10kg”, said Mr. Bay Bon. Occasionally, he sells coral fish to people, but not widely.

“The bigger the fish, the more expensive it is. Those that weigh less than 5kg are only more than 100,000 VND/kg; 7-8 kg, the price is from 200,000-300,000 VND/kg. Therefore, once in a while, a fisherman catches a fish weighing a few tens of kilograms and sells it for 1 million VND/kg,” said the farmer living on the Hau River.

According to him, now in the West, there are many people digging ponds to raise coral fish. However, fish raised in meat ponds is not as good as raised on rafts.

“Fish raised in rafts on the Hau River, which flows year-round, does not smell of moss or mud,” said Mr. Bay Bon. There are many restaurants and eateries hunting to buy coral fish to sell to diners.
