A 17-month-old patient was hospitalized because he drank the wrong oil to burn incense

The National Children’s Hospital has received and treated 5 cases of children ingesting incense oil leading to life-threatening respiratory failure. Typically, the case of a child with PD (17 months, Quang Ninh) was hospitalized on April 28. According to PD’s mother, during the holidays, the family went to the house of relatives in Thai Binh to play. When there was no adult around, the child drank an oil bottle to light the altar lamp on the ground.

“As soon as the incident happened, our family panicked, gave him a lot of water and hooked his throat to make him vomit. After that, the family took him to the district level for first aid and then brought him to Thai Binh province hospital for treatment for 3 days because of difficulty breathing, but the pneumonia got worse, so he had to go to the central level “- PD’s mother recalled.

The family also did not expect that the act of causing vomiting made the baby’s condition worse.

BSCKII. Le Thanh Chuong – Head of Respiratory Resuscitation Department – Respiratory Center, National Children’s Hospital said: “The most serious complication and the highest risk of death of mistakenly drinking oil for lighting is respiratory failure. The wrong treatment of lighting oil is not the same as when drinking some other liquids: absolutely do not gouge the throat to induce vomiting when the airway is not protected. Lighting oil is a volatile hydrocarbon with low surface tension, so it is easy to leak into the airways when swallowed, especially when causing vomiting. When entering the airways, the oil will spread very quickly in the lungs, causing mucosal necrosis, atelectasis and pneumonia. Gastric lavage should be performed only in children who have ingested large quantities of lubricating oil and must be taken to a medical facility after the child’s airways have been protected from oil entry, eg intubation prior to lavage.”

This is probably information that surprises many parents, because many people often mistakenly believe that children need to vomit to expel poison from the stomach after drinking by mistake.

Although all 5 children came to the hospital with respiratory failure requiring oxygen, which is life-threatening, but after appropriate treatment, all children were stable: no respiratory failure, no infection. infection, lung damage has recovered, has been and will be discharged, respectively.
