Controversy about tourists cutting flowers with “guts” to show off their “virtual life”

The case is attracting attention in Cambodian public opinion related to a video of a group of girls dressed in sexy clothes, showing off scenes of uprooting a few endangered flowering plants and then showing them on social networks. The video is said to have been filmed at Bokor mountain in the country’s Kampot province in early May.

According to the image from the video, a girl holds delicately shaped flowers in her hand and says something in front of the camera. At the end of this short clip, another girl uprooted the tree and joked about its modest size.

The NY Post reports that the plant species featured in the video is Nepenthes holdenii. This is a tropical pitcher plant. They occur in some mountainous areas of Cambodia. Due to its special shape, quite similar to the “sensitive parts” of men, locals also jokingly call it “penis tree”.

In the past few years, there has been a trend of locals and tourists going to the hilly areas of Cambodia, looking for this plant, uprooting them from the ground, taking photos and videos of “virtual living” and then posting them. on social networks. However, this plant species is in danger of extinction, so it has long been on the list of needing to be protected.

This “ugly” trend has worried local officials. Previously, the Cambodian government called on people to stop uprooting and playing with this tree. On May 11, the Ministry of Environment of this country issued a tough statement, asking people and tourists not to repeat the same behavior as in the video mentioned above.

“Thank you for loving natural resources. What you have done is wrong. Do not repeat this action in the future. Do not cut trees or pull flowers anymore, or they will be destroyed. “, part of the statement stated.

Currently, there is no formal complaint against the group of girls appearing in the above video.
