Greece has a shortage of tourism workers in the peak season

“I have to try to do everything from plumbing repairs to gardening. People are trying to find jobs with higher wages maybe overseas. This leaves us with no way out. to cope with the current difficult situation,” said Notis Chaldeos – owner of Vagia hotel, Greece.

Labor shortages are spreading throughout the tourism industry as more and more young Greeks are choosing high-paying jobs, or can work remotely. According to the Greek government, there are currently about 50,000 job vacancies in the tourism industry and about 5 job requirements with only one applicant.

“We are in dire need of help from the government. We need to pay our staff and continue to attract tourists to Greece,” said Notis Chaldeos.

“If the problem of labor shortages is not resolved next month, the situation will become more serious in the long term. Imagine if a seasonal employee goes to work this year at a company that is experiencing shortages of employees. members, they will have to work longer hours, more positions, and still have limited income. This will make them no longer want to return to work next year”, said Mr. Giorgos Xontzoglou – President of the Culinary Federation , Tourism and Hospitality Greece said.

In Greece, the tourism industry plays an important role, contributing about one-fifth of the GDP of the economy. If the hotel, restaurant cannot find enough employees during the upcoming high season, the outlook for the tourism industry and the whole economy of this southern European country will be significantly affected.
