Google restricts services in Belarus

Google’s sanctions against Russia have spread to Belarus.

Russia has been subjected to heavy international sanctions since it launched a military operation in Ukraine. Belarus is said to have contributed significantly to support Russia in the campaign.

Now, Google is taking action to impose the same restrictions on people in Belarus as it does on Russians. The search giant restricts access to paid apps in Belarus.

“As part of our compliance efforts, Google Play will not allow downloads of paid apps and updates for paid apps in Russia and Belarus,” reads in the billing support post written by Google Play.

Specifically, security and feature updates for purchased paid apps will no longer be available to Google users in Russia and Belarus. Google Play users in Belarus can still make in-app purchases and download apps for free.

Publishers and app developers are encouraged to offer free apps or remove paid subscriptions during the payment suspension.

The move to restrict access to paid apps in Belarus could be another step towards Google’s compliance with US sanctions, although the company doesn’t explicitly state that in its support website.

Since March 10, Google has disabled payment options for Russian users.
