Mother and son went to prison together for killing husband, father

After a week of lengthy deliberations, on the afternoon of May 17, the Family and Juvenile Court (HCMC People’s Court) sentenced Truong Thi Binh (45 years old, living in Cu Chi district, HCMC). and Binh’s son Huynh Van Quynh (19 years old) on the same charge of murder.

According to the prosecution, Binh and Huynh Van Quang were married in 2001 and have two children together, including defendant Quynh.

In 2019, due to many conflicts, Binh and his wife divorced, but still lived in the same house.

Although they are no longer husband and wife, the two still often quarrel, culminating in Mr. Quang saying that he would sell his house and kick Binh’s mother and daughter out of the house, so Binh had the intention to kill her ex-husband.

Around 8 pm on August 14, 2020, after drinking, Mr. Quang cursed Binh and continued to threaten to sell the house.

Seeing that, Binh went to his room to talk to his son, Huynh Van Quynh: “Your father sold his house and left his mother and daughter to live in a room, I risked killing him, what are you doing to help me”. Listening to her mother, Quynh agreed to kill her father with her mother.

At 20:30 on the same day, Mr. Quang continued to seek Binh to curse and beat. Angry, Binh knocked Quang down, then Quynh ran to hold his father’s legs so that his mother could strangle him with a rope.

Witnessing his mother and younger brother kill his father, Huynh Tan V. (older son) pleaded but Binh did not stop, continued to strangle her ex-husband to death.

After that, Binh and his mother carried the victim to his father’s chair in front of the house. On the morning of August 15, 2020, Binh went to tell his neighbors that Quang had died of sudden death.

However, detecting unusual signs, the police agency intervened. On August 16, 2020, Binh and his mother were arrested.

Before that, the case had been returned twice due to many details that needed to be clarified and because Mr. Huynh Van V. is the son of the victim and also the son of the accused Binh, had an application for consideration and sent to the City People’s Court. Ho Chi Minh City and the People’s Procuracy of Ho Chi Minh City. In the application, Mr. V. proposed to review the crimes for the two defendants.

Also in the application, Mr. V. presented, his father is a patriarchal, abusive, has no stable job, earns a living by divination. His mother (the defendant Binh) has to do enough jobs to support the family, all the money earned must be paid to her husband. Moreover, the accused was often beaten and abused by her husband.

At the trial, the defendants sincerely confessed their crimes. After considering, the trial panel sentenced defendant Binh to 11 years in prison, and defendant Quynh to 9 years in prison.
