USA: Young man died from digging a sand pit on the beach

Radio NDTV Police quoted police as saying that the young man’s sister was trapped in the sand pit after the incident.

The victim was Levi Caverly, who was digging a hole at the beach with his 17-year-old sister at the time. The Caverly brothers were crushed by sand after 4pm on May 17 (local time), according to a police announcement on the social network Facebook.

“At around 16:9 pm, police were deployed to the beach entrance near Seaview Road to deal with the case of children trapped in the sand. Multiple police units are on the scene. Please. do not come to this area” – the notice read.

It took rescuers 2.5 hours to pull Caverly out of the sand.

This is not the first time such an accident has occurred in the US. In July 2020, Belmar County, New Jersey police, along with rescuers and firefighters, rescued a boy from a collapsed sandpit.

Meanwhile, authorities on May 18 said a wall collapsed at a salt packing plant in western India, killing at least 12 workers and injuring 13 others.

The factory is located in Morbi district, 215 km west of Gandhinagar, the capital of the state of Gujarat.

According to the news agency AP, the injuries of 13 workers were mainly broken bones and not life-threatening. The rescue work is almost over. Authorities are investigating the cause of the wall collapse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Building collapses are common in India because many buildings are built with substandard materials. A building collapse in 2013 killed at least 72 people in Mumbai, India’s financial and entertainment hub.
