400 painful days of a woman being dragged and robbed: “Hope to prolong life is only 50”
In early May, the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City sentenced defendant Pham The Quang to 18 years in prison for robbery. More than a year ago, the defendant was the one who snatched the bag of Ms. Huynh Tu Tam (living in Binh Tan district, Ho Chi Minh City) causing serious injuries to the victim.
After the fall caused by Quang, Ms. Tam fell into a coma, critical. After regaining consciousness, she had to undergo 4 surgeries with a lot of pain in the past 1 year. Currently, one of her arms is still not working, and her legs are crooked.
“Doctor says life is only 50-50”
On March 30, 2021, Mr. Diep Huu Vi (41 years old, husband of Ms. Tam) received a phone call from the police to inform that his wife had an accident. Immediately, he ran to the hospital, but his mind was still thinking: “She will probably be okay”. When he got there, Vi seemed to want to collapse when he saw his wife lying on a pool of blood.

Around 7am that day, his wife was snatched by a young man on the street. Even before leaving the house, she carefully put on a coat over the outside, with only her identity papers and several tens of thousands of dong in her pocket, but she was still robbed.
The strong jerk of the subject caused Tam to fall to the road, her head hit the ground, bleeding a lot. For a week straight after being admitted to the emergency room, Ms. Tam fell into a coma due to her severe trauma.
Talking to us, Mr. Vi recalled: “The doctor said that the blood had gathered in my wife’s head, so she needed urgent surgery. The surgery cost was huge, the hope of prolonging her life was only 50-50. But without surgery, her mortality rate is very high.I foolishly borrowed money from relatives and acquaintances to pay for my wife’s hospital bills.For the past few decades, my husband and I have lived together. Even if there is only 1% hope left, I will try and not give up.”
Waiting outside the operating room, Mr. Vi fluttered in fear when he saw the white stretchers pushed out one by one. He bowed his head and prayed…
Determined not to give up
Fortunately, with Vi’s family, Mrs. Tam gradually recovered after major surgery. For 8 days, she only blinked a few times and then fell asleep. Occasionally, her limbs had convulsions, her family and doctors had to keep them. Twenty days after being admitted to the hospital, Tam started to wake up and gradually remembered what had happened to her.
As of May 2022, she had to undergo 4 surgeries, one side of her head was concave due to the removal of a damaged part of her skull. According to the doctor’s diagnosis, her injury rate was 89%. The life of both husband and wife, which was already difficult, is now extremely difficult because of Tam’s treatment money.

Ms. Tam, originally from Bac Lieu, moved to Ho Chi Minh City to work as a worker. Her monthly salary is only 8 million dong, so life is extremely difficult. Now, after the event, her legs could not walk firmly, and taking care of the children could not be the same as before. Economic pressure and taking care of a small family fell on Vi’s shoulders.
Talking about the burden after his wife’s accident, Mr. Vi lamented: “During the past time, I have had to go through a lot of difficulties and seem to want to collapse. But anyway, I am still the breadwinner of the family. cannot give up when his wife is facing the biggest events”.
These days, Mr. Vi still helps his wife with slow steps every day, helping her practice physical therapy. The young man who committed the crime had to pay the price of 18 years in prison every year, but Ms. Tam carried the injury for life.
Every day, she tries to learn to walk, to stand, to remember all the memories she has lost… To do that, fortunately, she has a husband who is always nearby, standing by her side, never abandoning her. any moment.
After half a month in the hospital, Ms. Tam was visited by a strange woman. That is Pham The Quang’s mother. According to Quang’s mother, she is a fruit trader, her husband is a motorbike taxi driver, and the family is also difficult. Quang is the son in the family but is addicted.
“She apologized to my family, expressed regret for not teaching her children carefully and paid some money. On the day of the court, we learned that the total amount she gave was 45 million (due to given many times.) I myself did not expect the young man who committed the crime to have such a young age”, Mr. Vi said sadly.
