When asked how it feels to not be at your best at the 31st SEA Games and receive both positive and negative comments at the same time, Schooling admitted: “I think we have a little bit of pressure from the beginning of the year, since after the period Olympic last year. The Singapore swimming team has a new coaching staff, so there have been changes, but things are still progressing gradually. I am also satisfied with the current team. In general, like you said, competition has its good times and bad, but sports are still the same. At the end of the day, I try to think positively to play better tomorrow. Actually, my performance this year is better than last year, so I don’t have much to say.”

Schooling continued: “There was a time when I was affected quite a lot, now I am not. I’ve gotten used to being adamant about not reading online comments anymore, just focusing on the competition. I’m not surprised at all that the Athletes of Vietnam is growing stronger and even breaking records. Perhaps that is the achievement that makes us come back and work harder.
He revealed: “My mother also came Vietnam this time to watch my kids play. My mother still sends me pictures of her going out for breakfast every day in Hanoi, which is richer than what I still eat in the hotel. I’m quite “envious” of my mother.”
