The director takes the bride by taxi
SingaporeAlthough she can afford to rent a luxury car, Ms. Wee Jie Xi, a human resources director of a technology company, chose a taxi as the bride’s car on May 15.
The driver is the bride’s biological father, Mr. Wee Phoy Thong, 65 years old this year.

“Since we started dating, I have made a pact with my husband about the plan to use Dad’s taxi to pick up the bride,” Wee said.
This decision of hers is to pay tribute to her father, who has been driving a taxi for nearly 30 years to support his family and help his children succeed. “Dad has been on buses since I was born. He used to take a taxi for me and my two brothers to go to school and back home safely every day,” Wee added.
In Singapore, young people choosing a taxi as a wedding car like Ms. Wee are very rare. Usually, the bride and groom prefer to rent luxury cars as a means of transportation on the big day.
Mr. Phoy Thong shared, taxi driving is a hard job, prone to diabetes, back pain and blood fat due to sitting a lot. “However, I never thought about changing careers. It has helped me raise three adult children,” said the 65-year-old man.
At the wedding of his daughter, because the ceremony was not solemn enough, Mr. Phoy Thong asked his colleague to drive two taxis with an escort company next to the bride’s car. He also intends to retire after Ms. Wee gets married, but can still drive part-time.
“I am very proud and respectful of my father for this. Even though he is old, he still wants to work,” Ms. Wee said.
