The family of 6 built a greenhouse worth more than 8 billion VND in the Arctic circle, choosing a self-sufficient life, close to nature
This special house is located on the land of Sandhorney Island, Norway, within the Arctic Circle. The owners of the house are husband and wife Benjamin and Ingrid Marie Hertefølger. A family of 6 members has lived here for 8 years with a low-cost, self-sufficient life, close to nature.

Sustainable life in the greenhouse
Inspired by homes featured in Netflix’s ”Home Furnishing Amazing”, Hertefølger conceived the idea of building a one-of-a-kind home – filled with nature for his family.
He wishes to live in an ecological house made from natural materials such as a mixture of sand, clay and straw, wood, and aquatic plants. But the house’s materials must also help it withstand the harsh weather conditions in the Arctic Circle. Recognizing the characteristics of the dome, the family contacted Solardome Industries to put a roof over their house.
To get the dome part, it took his family 3 weeks to complete the design drawings. The house has a lifespan of 100 years without regular maintenance.

The house also includes a basement for parking, and a yard
The dome is made entirely of aluminum and glass and has a diameter of 15m. The overall structure includes 360 glass panes, 11 windows and an entrance. The glass dome is resistant to heavy snowfalls, maintains a stable temperature in the house year-round, reduces violet radiation, requires little maintenance, and acts as a greenhouse for plants and organic vegetables. The family’s body is healthy.

Solar panels installed on the 2nd floor, along with a wood stove system will provide hot water for family members, reducing electricity consumption.
The protective domes also act as a recycling system allowing all waste such as irrigation water and fertilizers to be reused for the garden. The owners of the house grow their own food crops all year round, greatly reducing the family’s living costs.
Therefore, the cost of building the house cost nearly 300,000 pounds (8.6 billion VND), but the Hertefølger couple thought it was worth it.

The greenhouse environment is where the Herteflger family can grow a variety of fruits and vegetables on their own
According to the homeowner’s share, a feature and also an advantage is that the difference in indoor and outdoor temperatures makes spring come earlier. “When it was still freezing cold outside, in the indoor garden, the flowers were blooming and green,” said Hertefølger.

Benjamin and Ingrid Marie Hertefølger said the goal to build this house was to help their four children have a memorable childhood while living in this unique house. Instead of spending time on video games, the children can play hammock in the garden, practice archery, ride horses, play in the snow or wander in the woods. In particular, they want their children to be aware of the importance of nature when they grow up.

Children often help their parents with work and experience the joy of farming
Living in a greenhouse also had its own set of challenges for the Hertefølger family, such as having to make giant glass books. Work is usually scheduled before spring, because when the weather warms up and the snow melts, the job will be easier.

Through the glass arch, you can go directly into the small house – the living space of the whole Hertefølger family through a path of wooden panels. The rows of trees planted around bring a change of seasons to the facade of the house.

The lobby area is arranged with shoe racks and hangers so that family members can store their clothes as soon as they come home.

The point of interest is that the roof of the house is designed into a large floor, where people can observe the panoramic view around the house.

A yoga enthusiast, the top floor area and courtyard outside the house is where Hertefølger holds her yoga classes. In addition, his family also built a separate 60m2 dome house as a private space to organize meditation classes.

According to Hertefølger, it took his family 5 years to complete the dream house.
