A rare collision between a humpback whale and a yacht off the coast of Mexico on May 14 almost killed four people.
According to local reports, the impact caused the boat to wobble and send four passengers into the Gulf of California off the coast of Ahome, in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa.
All were rescued in time, but two were injured, including a woman with a broken leg and a man with broken ribs and head injuries. Footage at the end of the clip also shows the boat being towed to shore in a badly damaged condition.
Ahome Civil Defense Coordinator Omar Mendoza said the presence of large numbers of yachts in the Gulf of California, which is home to a large concentration of whales at this time of year, may have triggered the incident.
Ahome Mayor Gerardo Vargas also warned people to exercise caution when watching whales. “Please don’t get too close to them. We can enjoy the beauty of these giant creatures, but from a safe distance,” Vargas insisted.
Just a few weeks ago, another yacht was also damaged whale crashed into the air off the coast of the Mexican state of Baja California, sending three people to the hospital.
