Nepenthes plants survive in low-nutrient soils by supplementing their diet with live insects, using their nectar and sweet scent to attract prey. Insects feed on nectar around the mouth of the modified leaves, which, when mature, resemble vases. When insects fall inside, they drown in digestive juices and the hungry plant absorbs nutrients from the prey.

According to a 2021 study in the Cambodian Journal of Natural History, the natural habitat of the carnivorous pitcher plant in Cambodia has declined due to agricultural expansion on private lands and the development of the tourism industry. in protected areas.
