Canada bans Huawei and ZTE from participating in 5G networks

Speaking at a press conference in Ottawa, Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said the Government of Canada intends to eliminate technology corporations. Huawei and ZTE out of the 5G network in this country.

Accordingly, by June 28, 2024, businesses in Canada must remove or stop using 5G device by Huawei and ZTE. Businesses using 4G devices from Huawei and ZTE must also phase out these devices by December 31, 2027.

Minister Champagne emphasized that this decision will ensure the safety of Canada’s next generation network. Meanwhile, Canadian Public Security Minister Marco Mendicino said the decision marks “a new era in protecting Canada’s telecommunications industry”.

The decision comes after the Government of Canada’s thorough examination of 5G networks and wireless technologies.

Mendicino said that Canada will draft a new law to protect Canada’s 5G network. He said the new law would “establish a framework to better protect systems critical to Canada’s national security and give the Government a new tool to respond to cyber threats.” Emerging.”

The new law will also help protect infrastructure in the financial, energy and transportation sectors.

With the above decision, Canada joins a measure of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance including Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand and the US to ban or restrict the use of Huawei’s 5G equipment.

As of this week, Canada is the only Five Eyes member that has not taken the measure.
