Musang King durian grown in Vietnam costs nearly one million VND per kg

Musang King durian grown in Vietnam is selling for 650,000-800.000 VND per kg (unshelled), twice as high as in the same period last year.

Previously, the Vietnamese market consumed most of Malaysia’s frozen Musang King durian. In recent years, this variety has been experimentally planted by people in the Central Highlands and Mekong River Delta and has been bearing fruit for two years now. Currently, fresh and ripe Musang King has been sold in many fruit stores in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ms. Hang, a believer of this durian, said she had ordered two at the price of 700,000 VND per kilogram. However, it takes a week to have the goods because each batch of gardeners only has a few ripe fruits to fall. “Last year, I bought this type of gardener for only 300,000 VND per kilogram, but now the price has doubled,” she said.

Starting to sell this type of durian from the beginning of the week, Ms. Ngan, the owner of a food store in Ward 5, Go Vap District, said that customers order a lot but the quantity is quite limited. “Each fruit weighs 2-3 kg, costs 650,000 VND per kg. Thus, one fruit costs nearly 2 million VND”, Ms. Ngan calculated.

A fruit shop on No Trang Long Street, Binh Thanh District, said last week it sold this fruit for 800,000 VND per kilogram, higher than imported goods, but customers still ordered it.

According to fruit shop owners, Musang King grown in Vietnam is currently expensive because they are scarce at the beginning of the season (most are harvested in July-September) but the demand is high. On the other hand, this is a fresh type that has not been frozen like imported goods, so the price is more expensive.

Notes of VnExpress In the garden shows, the number of Musang King now is very small. Ms. Mai, who owns about 50 Musang King trees in Dak Lak, said that her garden has only been harvested in August, but now there are only a few ripe trees.

“This crop, my garden is expected to harvest about 5-7 quintals of Musang King. Since the tree has set fruit, there have been 3-4 traders asking to buy it, but I wait until the time of harvest to offer a selling price,” Ms. Mai said.

Last year, Musang King was sold commercially for the first time at Mr. Bon’s garden in Tien Giang with quantity 2 tons. He is also the first person in Vietnam to successfully grow and sell commercial Musang King durian to the market. Last year, the price of this fruit in the garden was 250,000 VND per kg, an average of 500,000-800.000 VND per fruit.

Musang King durian is native to the Malaysian state of Sabah. In the Vietnamese market, this durian is sold for 1.3 million VND per kilogram, separated. Musang King is known as the “durian king” because of its delicious taste.

The first person to discover this plant was Wee Chong Beng at the Musang cave area in Kelantan (Malaysia). After discovering the deliciousness, this fruit has been propagated to many areas outside of Musang cave and is popularly grown in Malaysia because of its high economic value.

Musang King durian has an oval shape, not too big, weighs 2-4 kg. The pods are dark green and have very large spines. Characteristic of this type is the groove between the left stem and the left body. The bottom left part clearly shows 5 big and thick packs.
