Rare monkeypox disease spreads in Europe, US records first case

Smallpox in monkeys shares similarities with smallpox and chickenpox, a common childhood illness. The illness has flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes. The rash then appears on the face and spreads to other parts of the body. Although there is no cure, monkeypox usually causes mild symptoms and the person recovers within a few weeks. The mortality rate of this disease is about 10%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

There are two strains of monkeypox, one in West Africa and one in Central Africa. The recent outbreak of smallpox is thought to be caused by a milder West African strain.

Monkeypox virus is very difficult to spread, mainly through contact with body fluids and sores, contaminated clothing or long-term direct contact leading to infection through respiratory droplets.

Also on May 18, Spanish health authorities sent a warning about the possibility of an outbreak of monkeypox in the city of Madrid after detecting eight suspected cases.

“In general, monkeypox can be transmitted through the respiratory tract. But eight suspected cases in Madrid are believed to have spread through contact with bodily secretions. They are all gay. Their condition is stable, but the disease can lead to hospitalization,” said a spokesman for Madrid’s health agency.

The warning comes after similar outbreaks in the UK and Portugal.

About 20 suspected cases of monkeypox have been detected in young men near Lisbon, while a similar outbreak in the UK was reported earlier this month.

As of May 17, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed seven cases of monkeypox, with the four most recent cases all involving gay or bisexual men.
