A man named Yilong Ma emerged from Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok exclusively for the Chinese market), when he posted a video on this social network in December 2021. In the clip, the guy with the same face as billionaire Elon Musk stands next to a Tesla – the car company of which Elon Musk is the CEO.
The similarity between Yilong Ma and Elon Musk caught the attention of Tesla CEO.
This clip quickly “caused a fever” on the social network Douyin and was re-shared on many social networking platforms such as Weibo, Facebook, Twitter… Many people after watching the clip thought that this guy was exactly like Elon Musk, but younger.
After that, Yilong Ma continued to post a few more clips on Douyin. In the posted videos, this guy identifies himself as “the Chinese version of Elon Musk” and is “Elon Musk’s twin brother”. Videos uploaded by Yilong Ma to Douyin have attracted millions of views.
However, recently, when accessing Ma Yilong’s account on Weibo, social network users saw the message: This account is currently banned for violating community rules. Yilong’s previous viral videos were also removed from the platform.
Stakeholders such as ByteDance, the parent company of Douyin and Tencent, which runs the social network Weibo, and Yilong Ma herself did not respond to requests for comment.
A law firm believes that if Yi Long Musk’s video series uses AI technology to swap faces, this behavior could violate the portrait rights of others. This could be the real reason why his Douyin account got banned.
Earlier that week, the “original” Elon Musk spoke about Yi Long Musk: “I’d love to meet that guy if he really exists. I don’t know anyone before today’s deepfake technology.” And just 1 day later, Yi Long Musk responded on Weibo: “I’m here and want to see you too. You’re a hero in my heart.”
Comments of “original” and “copy” have attracted many interactions. Most people want to see their reunion to see what’s going on.
