Vietnamese athletics dominate the 31st SEA Games
The Vietnamese track and field team had an unexpected success at the SEA Games with 22 gold medals, and the third place in the entire team for the third time in a row.
Three gold medals won on the last day of competition in the men’s marathon, men’s 20km walking and women’s events, closed the spectacular SEA Games of Vietnamese athletics at home.
That achievement brings the total number of gold medals won by Vietnam in athletics at SEA Games 31 to 22, along with 14 silver and 7 bronze. This is the third time in a row that Vietnamese athletics has won first place in the region.
That achievement helped the athletics team go beyond the set target of 15-17 gold medals. Once again, the “queen” sport continues to be a “gold mine” for the Vietnamese sports delegation in the regional arena.
Meanwhile, Thai athletics won a total of 12 gold medals, 10 silver medals and 9 bronze medals. This is the first time in history that Vietnamese athletics is far behind Thailand with a distance of 10 gold medals.
At the 31st SEA Games, Vietnamese athletics won historic gold medals from Bui Thi Nguyen (100m hurdles), Lo Thi Hoang (javelin throw), women’s 7 pentathlon (Nguyen Linh Na) and especially the men’s marathon for the first time. the first gold medal of the SEA Games of runner Hoang Nguyen Thanh. Never before, Vietnamese athletics has won a gold medal in this fierce distance.
The success of Vietnamese athletics at the 31st SEA Games has a significant contribution from the golden girl Nguyen Thi Oanh (3 gold medals 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m obstacle course). Next to it is Quach Thi Lan, “old man” Nguyen Van Lai with a double gold medal (5,000m and 10,000m). It is mother of one child Nguyen Thi Huyen with 2 gold medals (400m and 4x400m women) to bring her total achievement of 10 gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games in her athletics career.

The absence of “speed queen” Le Tu Chinh causing athletics to miss the opportunity to defend 2 gold medals in the women’s 100m and 200m races. Tran Nhat Hoang could not defend the 400m gold medal because of injury, the relay team failed in both the men’s 4x400m and the men’s 4x400m. However, Vietnam still creates a historic milestone in the basic sport of the Olympics and continues to affirm its No. 1 position in the region.
