Career advancement, trusted boss, precious colleagues if you firmly grasp these precious 21 MINUTES!

01

Not long ago, China’s 36Kr page released “Report of young employees in 2021”. Data shows that 76.1% of young people work overtime every day or regularly, and more than 30% of young people never leave work on time.

This phenomenon is probably not unique to China.

Although 95% of 9X employees don’t want to bring their computers home, the reality is that 66% of them will bring their computers home to work overtime, and only 10% of employees never work overtime after work. job.

People often joke with each other: “It’s over, but it’s not completely finished”, “The so-called after work, it’s just going home to continue working”, “It’s over! It’s a joke!” …

But overtime, is it all because of too much work? Not all.

I once read a story about an old woman sending postcards in a book like this:

An old woman wants to send a postcard to her granddaughter. It took her 1 hour to find a postcard, 1 hour to choose a postcard, 30 minutes to find her niece’s address and more than 1 hour to write a message. When deciding to send a postcard to bring an umbrella, it took another 20 minutes. . After doing all this, the old woman was exhausted.

But the same thing, a person with a busy job can complete it in just 5 minutes during a break.

Why do different people spend so much time doing the same thing?

After all, still different in terms of performance.

How does overtime due to workload happen?

For example, you know you have a very important task to complete today, but you always prioritize some unimportant work in the morning and wait until you are ready to leave before starting. Get to work on what needs to be done. Finally, because there is not enough time, you have to work overtime.

Perhaps many people have had an experience like this: a planning project can be completed in just 2 hours, but because there is a lot of time, they can’t help opening their phones, surfing this news, reading that news. . It was not until the last moment, when they felt the urgency of handing over the task, that they put down the phone and finished the manuscript in a hurry.

After all, tasks that are completed in a hurry are mostly unsatisfactory.

So, it seems to be busy every day, but I don’t see myself making any progress.

In the book “Deep work rules” it says:

Quality work = time invested x focus.

Even if you work overtime from 8am to 10pm, work 14 hours a day, it can only prove you are diligent, not a competent person.

The important thing is to see what you did in those 14 hours.

Therefore, even if you work up to 10 pm every day, you can still be fired at any time.

So how can we change this vicious cycle?

The most important thing is to realize one fact: for the same 2 hours, getting up early is much more effective than staying up late.

Chai Sang, the author of the book “Another Kind of Genius”, once explained this point using his personal experience.

When Chai Sang was in college, she used to wake up at 6:30 a.m. to memorize new words. After memorizing 50 words, she started washing the previous day’s clothes, then went downstairs to have breakfast, after breakfast. After finishing, she returned to the dormitory to pack her bag and go to class.

The moment she opened the bedroom door, her roommate had just woken up.

Later, after graduating, Chai Sang did not need to memorize new words or go to class, so he gradually became lazy, often sleeping until 11 am, then staying up late to work.

As a result, her work efficiency became lower and lower, she even had low blood sugar because of staying up late for a long time, often getting dizzy if she sat in front of the computer for more than two hours…

She began to realize that this was not the right way to do it, so she tried to slowly switch back to the early morning regimen like when she was in college.

Get up early to write, get up early to read, get up early to run…

As a result, Chai Sang found that the manuscripts she wrote in an hour or two early in the morning were extremely effective.

Someone once said:

“You stay up late playing video games, it’s called a game addiction, but if I tell my mom that I want to play video games so I get up early, she’ll say, you’re too self-conscious.”

It seems like a joke, but in reality, staying up 2 hours late and waking up 2 hours early is indeed very different.

Because the initial state of the morning often influences our behavioral patterns throughout the day.

Chai Sang mentioned the concept of “21-minute time zone in the morning” in his book.

Morning is very important because it sets the mental state for the work of the day.

Mark Twain once wrote, “Eat a raw frog in the morning, and the rest of the time will be a lot easier because nothing worse can happen to you.”

What does it mean? Meaning, if you get the most essential tasks done each morning, the rest of the day will be relatively easier.

What we choose to do first at the beginning of the day often greatly affects the time of day.

If you play with your phone for an hour as soon as you walk into the office, the “play” tune will be “accompanied”, so you will easily “fall” and waste your day.

Chai Sang says she has tested it many times and has found that setting the “primary time zone” to 21 minutes is the most effective.

In other words, you can set your daily alarm clock 21 minutes earlier, and then for those 21 minutes, do only the things you want to do and are most important to today.

This way, you will be more productive and feel comfortable throughout the day.

So how can you make good use of these 21 precious minutes in the morning?

Do creative work when the energy is at its best

According to the theory of brain science, our brains are most alert within two or three hours of waking up, this is the golden period of brain function and work efficiency can double. average state, or even more.

Psychological research also found that the morning is the best time to do creative work, the brain after completing the process of integrating and clearing information during the day in a deep sleep at night, energy fully restored.

In the morning, individuals are at their best, with the highest willpower and creativity.

So for 21 minutes, it’s time to do the most creative work. For example, writing, drawing, making a schedule, writing a plan, etc.

② Plan from the day before

Coming home from work in the evening after a busy day, you are probably exhausted.

So, don’t use it in the evening for study and creativity, you can lie down for a while, after all, people will not be able to think of other things when tired.

At this time, you can also do something light: make a “plan for tomorrow” table, which means that in your mind you have to think about tomorrow’s work plan.

Once you have an intention in mind, it’s easier to automatically trigger your next motivation – starting the next day’s 21 precious minutes.

③ Use energy management to beat time management

Studies have found that the time it takes for the goals we set for ourselves is often underestimated by us.

Sometimes when you find things don’t work out, it’s not because you’re incompetent, but because your plan doesn’t keep up with the changes.

A survey of 2,000 employees in the United States found that in a working day, an employee can be focused and productive on average in just 2 hours and 53 minutes.

Therefore, promoting and maintaining a state of mind makes more sense than time management.

For example, do the most important work when you are at your best, and do a little more. When the energy is not good, just do what you want, don’t force yourself to complete according to the plan.

Wake up an hour earlier every morning, every month you will have an extra 30 hours. If you persist for a year, you will earn 360 hours more than others.

There is a saying like this:

In fact, you can replace staying up late with waking up early. When the world is still sleeping, the parents are still sleeping, the boss is sleeping, the teacher is sleeping, the world is still sleeping, you can watch the sun rise slowly, then you will realize that, light will always appear. The people you care about will slowly wake up, the world will still move slowly, and you will still have time to yourself.
