Russia stops supplying gas to Finland

“The import of gas through the Imatra entry point has been stopped,” the company said in a statement.

Russian gas exporter Gazprom has confirmed that it will stop all gas supplies to Finland.

“Gazprom has stopped supplying gas completely to Gasum (Finland) due to their non-payment in rubles. At the end of the business day on May 20, Gazprom did not receive any gas payment in April. from Gasum” under the new payment mechanism in rubles. Gasum also confirmed on May 21 that the gas supply had been stopped.

Earlier this week, Gasum announced the company would not follow the Russian ruble payment mechanism.

Finland imports a large amount of natural gas from Russia, but this fuel only accounts for about 5% of the energy that Finland uses.

Nearly 30% of the main energy in Finland comes from wood, 22.5% from oil, 19% from clean energy.

In 2020, Russia supplied about 1.61 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Finland and last year it was 1.8 billion cubic meters. In addition, Finland also has 2 liquefied natural gas stations in Pori and Tornio with a capacity of 0.65 billion cubic meters per year.

To completely replace Russian gas supplies, Finland will have to use the entire existing energy infrastructure because the Nordic country does not have underground gas reserves, analysts say.

State-owned Gasum said it was prepared for Russia to cut off gas supplies. Finland hopes to receive gas from Estonia via the Balticconnector gas pipeline during the summer, although last month Estonia also rejected a new Russian payment mechanism and the pipeline’s capacity limitations could further complicate the situation.
