Disabling extremely poisonous snake venom thanks to an unexpected compound

Bothrops jararaca, also known as “yarara” – is an extremely venomous snake endemic to South America. Each year there are about 26,000 cases of this highly venomous snake attack in Brazil alone.

From that fact, the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo has researched and found a compound that can neutralize the venom caused by the bite of bothrops jararaca snakes.

“A modified version of the rutin compound, water-soluble succinyl rutin, which prevents snakebite venom. This compound is extracted from fruits and vegetables” – company Reuters Research guide of Butantan Institute scientists published in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology.

This finding helps to complement serum treatments, providing emergency solutions for people bitten in remote places where there is no immediate access to medical facilities.

However, the study also emphasizes that serum transfusion is still the main method to treat cases of venomous snake bites.

“Rutin will serve as an adjuvant, not a substitute for serum. It slows the effects of the venom, controls bleeding and inflammation,” said researcher Marcelo Santoro.
