Gurman’s case had to use a physical SIM card to reactivate the service. The carrier representative also did not hide that he was not the only case with this situation and Apple could do nothing to solve the problem.

Based on the sharing of users, the problem does not seem to be confined to the US. An Airtel customer in India also had iMessage and FaceTime deactivated and there was no way to solve it until this person switched to using a physical SIM card.
