Huawei phones suddenly come with free premium Android apps

One of the efforts of Huawei is AppGallery, it’s basically the Google Play Store or App Store version for Huawei phones. However, AppGallery was found to have a sizable problem that hasn’t been fixed for months, even though the person who discovered the problem has been reporting to Huawei since February this year.

This vulnerability allows anyone with a bit of technical knowledge and time, as well as a willingness to put in a little effort, to download and install any Paid Apps (premium) from AppGallery without actually paying. Needless to say, that sounds pretty bad for developers who have been with Huawei so far.

Dylan Roussel, the developer who found the problem, stressed that the problem was not caused by the app developers themselves not allowing license verification on their apps, but instead stemming from a vulnerability on the side. Huawei, which has yet to be resolved. The gist of Roussel is that the AppGallery API doesn’t provide any protection for paid apps.

Roussel herself was able to download and use many paid apps by exploiting this vulnerability. Obviously this is problematic because crooks can use the API to download a large number of paid apps at once, making it impossible for app developers to make the money they deserve. Hopefully Huawei will fix this vulnerability soon if the company doesn’t want AppGallery to be abandoned by developers.
