It is recommended to keep History as a compulsory subject

The Committee for Culture and Education proposed to keep History as a compulsory subject due to concerns that high school students would not choose when this subject was included in the elective program.

On the morning of May 22, the National Assembly’s Committee for Culture and Education held a plenary meeting to discuss the history curriculum at high school. Vice President Nguyen Thi Mai Hoa suggested that the Ministry of Education and Training absorb the opinions of voters and the people, stipulating that History is a compulsory subject for high schools in the 2018 general education curriculum. Design the amount of historical knowledge required and optional parts accordingly.

Explaining the above proposal, the Vice Chairman of the Culture and Education Committee said that the majority of the Committee members did not agree with making High School History an optional subject. High school students (15-17 years old) have cognitive maturity, which is the age that determines the formation of worldview, system of views on nature and society, principles and codes of conduct, determination of human values. The fostering of historical knowledge for high school students is necessary for comprehensive development and arousing the aspiration to develop a prosperous country.

“If they don’t choose History at the high school level (the rate can be up to 50%), they won’t have access to very important and educationally meaningful knowledge for this age group,” Ms. Hoa said. said, adding that in many countries, high school history is always compulsory.

Delegate Nguyen Thi Viet Nga agreed that History must be a compulsory subject because in fact high school students are not interested in this subject, and their scores in many exams are very poor. The reason is not because History is not attractive, but the program is heavy on “academic, complex and rather boring presentation”. She suggested changing in the direction of encouraging children to see and evaluate, not just passively absorb.

New general education program approved in 2018. After four years of preparation, when it was about to be implemented with grade 10, the program encountered many controversial opinions about letting History be an optional subject. Many people think that this is inadequate given the particularly important position of the subject, and even fear that History, if not fully taught in schools, will make future generations forget the past.

In mid-April, the Ministry of Education and Training confirmed that the arrangement of History subject in the new curriculum still met the educational requirements of this subject for high school students. The new general education program is divided into two phases. The basic education stage (five years of primary school and four years of lower secondary school) aims to equip students with basic general knowledge. The career-oriented education phase (three years of high school) ensures students access to careers and prepares for the post-high school period.

At the lower secondary level of the basic stage, History is taught from grades 6 to 9, equipping students with core knowledge of the entire world history, Vietnamese history from primitive to ancient, medieval, modern and modern. “At this stage, in the entire lower secondary school level, all students learn Vietnamese national history fully and comprehensively,” emphasized the ministry.

At the high school level – the career orientation period, History is arranged as a subject in the social complex. Topics and topics of History subject are in-depth content. Students who are not majoring in the social sciences can still choose History if they find it necessary for themselves or necessary to serve the career of their choice.

The new program also spends 20% of the time on local history, which is compiled and taught by the localities themselves.
