The two Japanese carmakers, part of an alliance with French carmaker Renault SA, were once seen as pioneers in Japan’s electric vehicle market but have struggled to attract customers. and face challenges from fast-growing newcomers like Tesla.

“I am confident that the new vehicles that represent the alliance will be a game changer for electric vehicles in Japan,” said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida.

Automakers are hoping to boost their presence in the Japanese market known for its micro “kei” cars, which make up nearly 40% of the cars on the road in Japan.

Earlier this year, the three-company alliance detailed a five-year plan to invest $26 billion in electric vehicle development, including kei cars.

Nissan, the maker of the Leaf and Ariya electric vehicles, will offer its first light-electric vehicle, the Sakura, with a starting price of about 1.78 million yen ($13,891) after receiving government subsidies and with a range of 180 km.

Mitsubishi Motors, the maker of the i-MiEV electric car, will release an “eK cross EV” with a starting price of about 1.85 million yen, including subsidies, also with a range of 180 km.

Both automakers said they will start selling new electric “kei” vehicles this summer.

“People who used to think electric cars are too expensive will become a little more interested in electric vehicles and will be willing to try them out,” emphasized Riho Suzuki, Nissan regional product manager.
