Premature baby weighs only 5 kg, his hand is as small as his father’s finger, the picture after 1 year is surprising

According to the definition of the World Health Organization (WHO), a baby born before 37 weeks of gestation is called preterm. In particular, babies born before the 28th week of pregnancy will be extremely premature and have a very low survival rate. But here is a miraculous case when the baby was born at 23 weeks, weighed less than 5 kg and managed to get through the “narrow door” to successfully survive.

That is the case of baby Elsie, the child of Katie Hampson’s mother, 27, who lives in the UK. Katie said since pregnant At 8 weeks, she had heavy bleeding and was diagnosed with a subchondral hematoma. The condition did not improve forcing Katie Hampson to give birth prematurely at 23 weeks at Royal Oldham Hospital, Greater Manchester, England.

Katie was forced to give birth at 23 weeks and the baby was born weighing only 480g.

Immediately after coming out of the womb, Elsie was taken to the intensive care unit. The image of a tiny child, a hand as small as a father’s finger, and fragile skin that can be seen through makes Katie and her husband not dare to hold on to much hope. The doctors themselves also warned her and her husband to prepare mentally because the chance of the baby surviving is only 5%.

“My daughter was tiny then, her skin was almost see-through, I prayed a lot.” shared mother.

But with that small 5%, Elsie miraculously survived and developed. Even the doctors with many years of experience at the hospital were amazed at the girl’s strength and vitality.

After 70 days in hospital, the baby was 6 kg, much healthier than before. Almost five months after giving birth, Elsie was well enough and sent home for the first time. Currently, Elsie is almost 1 year old and is living with her parents in their home in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Elsie miraculously survived and is now almost 1 year old.

Katie Hampson confided: “REDIt was a horrible time. I don’t know if I’ll lose Elsie or not. I worry a lot. Her body is about the size of Rob’s hand, her little hand is no bigger than my husband’s finger. My daughter looks like a little doll. Even the doctor didn’t hold out much hope that the baby would survive, but the baby was indeed a little warrior. We are very proud of the baby.”

Possible complications of premature birth

Elsie’s miraculous survival surprised the doctors and many people. Preterm birth is always one of the extremely dangerous pregnancy complications. Babies born prematurely are at risk of health problems because their organs are not fully developed. Health problems that premature babies can have include:

– Growth and development disorders

– Cerebral palsy.

Low blood sugar makes premature babies more susceptible to colds

– Jaundice due to liver not fully developed. Babies born prematurely have a longer period of jaundice than full-term babies

– Blood disorders.

– Having heart problems.

– Have breathing problems.

– Weak immune system. High risk of infection. The baby’s immunity is usually acquired from the mother in the late stages of pregnancy. Therefore, premature babies have a 4 times higher risk of infection than normal babies.

– Vision or hearing problems

– Sudden infant death syndrome.

– Inguinal hernia due to muscle weakness in the thigh folds.

Premature babies are at risk for emotional and behavioral problems.

– Sometimes premature babies are at risk of dying prematurely because they are not mature enough, resistant… to survive.
