Serhiy Haidai, governor of Lugansk, said that Russian forces were unsuccessful in breaking into the city, despite attacking from four different directions.
On the messaging app Telegram, he said: “The Russians tried to enter Severodonetsk from four directions at once, but they were repelled and retreated to their previous position.”

He accused Russia of continuing to fire mortars and artillery at residential areas. Almost every town and village controlled by Ukraine suffered damage.
On May 20, Haidai said that a school where more than 200 people were hiding, including many children, had been affected, and more than 60 houses were destroyed across the area.
Neither of these claims can be independently verified.
Earlier, on May 21, the British Ministry of Defense said that the city of Severodonetsk is considered one of Russia’s “immediate tactical priorities” when it comes to deploying destructive tanks to this area.
The latest British intelligence report says that Russia may have deployed the BMP-T tank support combat vehicle unit, or Terminator, to the Severodonetsk axis during the Donbas attack.
In his nightly address on May 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “the situation in Donbass is extremely difficult”, as the Russian military has been increasing attacks on Slovyansk and Severodonetsk in the past few days.
Mr. Zelensky said: “Ukrainian Armed Forces are stopping this attack. Every day our defenders eliminate these Russian offensive plans, disrupt them, is a concrete contribution to the way approach of the official date”.
Meanwhile, the military forces of the separatist Donetsk Republic said that the forces of the two separatist republics Donetsk and Lugansk, with the support of Russia, have liberated and established full control over 216 settlements on the territory of the Donetsk Republic.
