Spain: The temperature in May is high, possibly the hottest heat wave in 20 years

Spain’s National Weather Service (AEMET) posted on Twitter: “The early morning of May 21 was unusually warm this year in much of the central and southern regions of the peninsula.”

AEMET has issued a warning about rising temperatures in 10 regions of Spain on May 21, where temperatures are forecast to reach their highest.

On May 20, the record for the highest temperature in May was broken in the city of Jaen, Andalusia, with temperatures reaching 40°. CAEMET information, the average temperature in Jaen, the southern city of Spain, is 16°C higher than usual for this time of year. Elsewhere in Spain, temperatures were at least 7°C above normal.

AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo said earlier this week that, if officially confirmed, this could be the first recorded heat wave in May in Spain.

“This high temperature background is very unusual in mid-May and could be one of the most intense heat waves in 20 years,” said Ruben del Campo.
