The unexpected dangers of not wearing a seat belt when driving at slow speeds

According to Assoc. Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc, Director of the Automotive Technical Training Program (Hanoi University of Science and Technology), many people do not wear seat belts because they think that walking in the city is slow, unnecessary, and makes the driver uncomfortable. roof.

However, this is a very wrong and dangerous thinking. Because even if you go slowly, in the event of a collision, the occupants of the vehicle can still be injured.

To easily visualize the risk of injury, Assoc. Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc compares the amount of energy exerted on passengers when a car collides with falling from a high-rise building:

– Kinetic energy of each passenger when collided with velocity V [m/s] as follows: L= mv^2/2

– Potential energy when falling from a height h [m] as follows: T = mgh

So, suppose that when cars collide at different velocities, the energy exerted on the passenger will be equivalent to falling from the following heights:

– 30 km/h corresponds to a height of 3.5 m ie falling from the 2nd floor

– 40 km/h corresponds to a height of 6.3 m ie falling from the 3rd floor

– 70 km/h corresponds to a height of 19.3 m ie falling from the 7th floor

– 80 km/h corresponds to a height of 25.2 m ie falling from the 9th floor

– 100 km/h corresponds to a height of 39.3 m ie falling from the 14th floor

So even at a speed of 30km/h, the danger level is equivalent to falling from the 2nd floor. And just like falling from the 2nd floor depending on different conditions the bodily harm is different, but still potentially deadly. Therefore, it cannot be said that, when traveling in the street, at slow speed, you do not need to wear a seat belt.

Therefore, no matter what speed you drive, when you get in the car, fasten your seat belt first.

Indeed, the research and development of safety systems such as airbags, belts … is the most expensive and difficult work in car design (each test is to destroy a complete car). And you also have to spend a lot of money to be able to buy a car to travel more safely. So why not fasten your seat belt? – Assoc. Dr. Dam Hoang Phuc emphasized.

How much is the penalty for not wearing a seat belt while driving?

Wearing seat belts while driving is very important to protect everyone. However, there are still many people who are subjective and disregard that importance.

An IIHS survey of people 18 and older in the US found that, out of 1,172 survey participants, only 72 percent said they used a seat belt when in the back seat, much lower. compared to 91% of people in the front seat.

In Vietnam, Point p, Clause 5, Article 5 of Decree 100/2019/ND-CP stipulates a fine ranging from VND 800,000 to VND 1 million for the act of not wearing a seat belt while driving a car. Street.

Meanwhile, the administrative sanction for back seat passengers not wearing seat belts has been applied since January 1, 2018.

Decree 100/2019/ND-CP stipulates a fine of 300,000 – 500,000 VND for people who are transported in cars without seat belts (at locations equipped with seat belts) when the vehicle is running on the road. ; and a fine of from VND 800,000 to VND 1 million for the act of carrying people in a car without seat belts (at locations equipped with seat belts) while the vehicle is running.
