Fighting is intensifying in the eastern territories of Ukraine, as President Vladimir Putin’s army steps up efforts to gain control of the Donbass.
The Russian military attempted to cut off Ukraine’s Severodonetsk defenses by crossing the Siverskyi Donets river near Belogorivka on May 11. However, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces successfully stopped the Russian army, killing more than 400 soldiers and destroying many armored vehicles.
On May 20, the Russian military tried again, this time trying to cross the river near the village of Dronivka. But it seems that Moscow continues to be prevented.
According to Ukraine’s 30th Mechanized Brigade, they wiped out dozens of Russian armored vehicles.
Specifically, the brigade stated: “We defeated the Russian army near the village of Dronivka, Donetsk region, during their crossing of the River Siverskyi Donets.”
The Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communications (StratCom) also noted: “The Russian army attempted to break through the Siverskyi Donets river near the village of Dronivka and establish three bridgeheads. However, the unyielding bravery of the infantry units, The artillery and tanks of the 30th Mechanized Brigade and other units of the Armed Forces helped us stop the Russians and inflicted heavy losses on them, resulting in dozens of units of Russian armored vehicles. destroyed”.
The River Siverskyi Donets is about 1,000km long, originates in Russia, meanders southeast through the Donbas region and then rejoins Russian territory. The terrain along the river features marshes and floodplains, which form an effective barrier against armored vehicles.
The Ukrainian military said during its daily briefing on May 21 that Russian forces were trying to install bridging equipment again near the River Siverskyi Donets, with the aim of attacking the city of Yampil.
Ukraine’s military said: “Russia is constantly attacking the east with the goal of establishing full control over the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.”
