Apple is testing a folding iPhone, will it compete with Samsung?

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is testing E Ink color screen technology (Electronic Paper Display) on folding iPhones. According to experts, this technology will be used for secondary screens, helping to save energy.

“In the future, the Electronic Paper Display screen may become popular for folding devices thanks to its ability to save battery,” Ming-chi Kuo shared on his Twitter page.

The reason lies in the fact that E Ink is a technology used frequently on the screens of e-readers. The E Ink screen can only display two-tone black and white and gives users the feeling of reading a book on printed paper.

According to The Verge, most folding phones on the market today usually have a large internal screen along with a smaller outer screen to conveniently display notifications. In particular, smartphones like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Oppo Find N use OLED technology for both screens.

Meanwhile, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will equip E Ink technology for the secondary screen, and use a more advanced curtain for the large screen inside. This means that Apple’s folding smartphone may produce poor response, low color display, but will save more energy.

E Ink used to be popular with black and white screens, but the latest version of this technology has shown the ability to display more colors with high resolution. The refresh rate of E Ink is also improved, but not comparable to OLED or LCD screens. Therefore, “choosing to use E Ink screen is a different move for Apple compared to other Android smartphone manufacturers”, 9to5mac identify.

Previously, many rumors suggested that Apple was about to enter the folding phone market along with Samsung and Huawei. In 2021, a few reports have indicated that the company is testing a build for a folding screen smartphone. By April 2022, Kuo also predicts that Apple will launch a product equipped with a 9-inch wide folding screen in 2025. Even, according to Bloombergthe technology giant is working on a new device with a 20-inch folding screen and is expected to launch in 2026 at the earliest.

Despite being slow in the folding phone market, Apple still has its own advantages such as the iPadOS operating system that is easily customizable to fit the folding screen. Meanwhile, products from Samsung, Oppo or Huawei have to depend on Android, so it is difficult to support devices with large screens, according to the report. The Verge.
