EU admits to running out of military equipment to help Ukraine

“The depleted stockpiles of military support for Ukraine are the most obvious example of our shortfall. However, it is also the result of budget cuts and ininvestment in the past. The EU’s defense capabilities and military spending are not in line with the capabilities needed to combat security threats,” Borrell wrote in a blog post.

According to Mr. Borrell’s statistics, between 1999 and 2021, the EU’s aggregate defense spending increased by only 20% compared with 66% for the US, 292% for Russia and 592% for China.

Therefore, Mr. Borrell argues that the EU needs to increase military spending to be able to equip modern armed forces and replenish stockpiles, while strengthening the areas of air defense, cyber and space in the next 5 years.

In the long term, Mr. Borrell said that EU members need to focus on procuring and building weapons together, such as battle tanks.

In a separate development, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki accused Norway of “unjustly making money from oil and gas during the Ukraine conflict”.

Morawiecki said at the National Youth Dialogue Congress on May 21 that Norway should share in the profits it makes when oil and gas prices soar amid the conflict between Russia and Russia. Ukraine is happening.

“Shouldn’t we pay Norway a huge gas bill – four or five times more than we paid a year ago? This sucks. Not necessarily profit sharing. with Poland but maybe with Ukraine.” – said Mr. Morawiecki.
