This is the most notable assassination in Iran since assassination of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh in November 2020.
The IRGC describes Colonel Khodai as a “guardian of the holy land” – a term used for anyone working on behalf of Iran in Syria or Iraq. Iran maintains considerable political influence in both countries.
